Where these numbers come from

They are pulled from the mode's own files for patch 26.15, the one currently live. The source is community-run rather than an official Riot API, and the game shifts with community votes, so a gap with your own game is always possible.

In short

Ryze is the opposite of a skillshot mage. Overload is targeted and never misses, Rune Prison roots, and Spell Flux bounces between enemies while cutting their magic resist. Arcane Mastery does the rest: every cast shortens the cooldown of the others, so the cleaner and faster you play, the tighter the loop gets. This champion is about rhythm, not timing.

The price is range. His spells force him to stand far closer than a normal mage, and he has no dash and no shield to get out. Desperate Power turns his abilities into area damage and gives him spell vamp and movement speed for a short window, which makes it both his teamfight button and his survival button. Without the ultimate, an assassin who commits on him usually walks away alive.

Strengths and weaknesses

His damage cannot be dodged. That's rare and it's huge: against a mobile opponent who relies on movement to avoid abilities, you simply keep hitting them. Rune Prison locks a target down while the rotation comes back up, and the magic resist shred from Spell Flux inflates everything that lands after it. Desperate Power then turns his single-target spells into area damage, making him one of the best wave clearers on the roster while it's active.

The limits are harsh. He has to fight at a range where everyone can reach him, he burns mana at an alarming rate, and his early game is among the poorest in the mode: until his items arrive, the rotation chips without killing. He has no escape and no interrupt, and one root landed at the wrong moment ends him. He's a champion who has to survive a long time before he matters.

Laning phase

Max Overload first and accept that you're playing a farming lane. Your cast range is short, so every free poke puts you inside their engage range: only trade if you can commit to the full rotation, never for one spell. Rune Prison is not an opening tool in lane, it's your insurance against the jungler coming through the river.

Watch your mana like a game clock rather than a bar: a Ryze who empties it to shove a wave is a Ryze who cannot defend himself for the next minute. Against a long-range opponent, let the wave come to your tower and pick minions up with Spell Flux, which hits several at once. Your back timings matter more than most champions': every mana item genuinely changes what you're allowed to do next.

Power spikes

His first real spike isn't a level, it's the item that fixes his mana and his survivability at the same time. Before it, Ryze is a mediocre mage everyone pushes around; after it, the rotation starts to bite and he can stay in a skirmish without dying. The second spike is cooldown reduction: between the Overload passive and a dedicated item, the loop becomes continuous.

The third is his ultimate level, which finally gives him a button that matters in a grouped fight and lets him survive the moment three enemies decide to walk at him. Past those three steps, Ryze becomes one of the few mages who can hold a side lane alone against a fighter, because his target can neither dodge nor disengage.

Teamfights and positioning

You don't open fights, you sustain them. Your spot is just behind the front line, close enough to cast, far enough that the enemy engage doesn't pick you first. Fire Desperate Power once the fight is genuinely committed, not in anticipation: the duration is short and the spell vamp only pays off while you're taking and dealing damage.

Order matters in a fight. Spell Flux first, because it strips magic resist off the whole cluster and inflates everything that follows, then the rotation onto whatever your team is focusing. Save Rune Prison for the enemy trying to leave or the one diving your carry: it's your only control tool and it's worth more than one more damage spell. If you're the first one touched, you have nothing to answer with, so always enter second.
